KNITTING AS AN ART FORM

Yarn as Metaphor!
The inspiration for this series of work derived from a very old sweater that I snatched from a friend who was about to end its life as a donation. Its high quality contents contained one which was a slender intertwined gray and black yarn and the other, a thick nubby off-white wool. The two were knitted into a simple repetitive striped pattern which begged for revitalizing. Back in my studio, the detachment of one stripe from the other produced knitted units of varying lengths. Each stripe reminded me of musical notation bars from which I could create optical music. My mission was clear: to explore the possibilities of making pictorial rhythms composed to intrigue onlookers with unique and unexpected art enhanced by the addition of some unusual graphical beats.
