SELF PORTRAITS
Looking at Me!
Usually, I avoid mirrors.
However, it is very difficult to make a self-portrait without one.
Another challenge is to stare and examine myself! I try to discover more about my face and expressions. Then, memorize the visual impact and translate that insight into a facial expression.
When I just draw or paint a face that is meant to represent any person, it always looks very similar to me. This consistent outcome tell me that I inherently know what I look like without looking in the mirror. My face is the one I know best. Portraits of specific people are a huge challenge, I rarely attempt to do it.
